Model Aanganwadi Project
Education initiative at Vadinar and Salaya: Model Aanganwadi Project
Aanganwaadis are centres created under the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) programme, by the Government of India. These centres cater to educational, health, hygiene, and nutritional needs of children aged between two and five years. For every 1,000 people, one aanganwadi is established.
The Essar Foundation in association with the Government of Gujarat, embarked on a project to develop 25 pre-schools called 'Nandghar' at Aanganwadi Centres in 15 villages around Essar Oil's refinery at Vadinar and the nearby Salaya power plant. Nandghar is a Gujarat Government project for Aanganwadis, which aim to provide a child- friendly space and made attractive through the use of mural paintings, alphabets and numbers on walls.
The Essar Foundation developed four aanganwadis to provide a modern environment to the children in the villages.
The Essar Foundation teamed up with local NGOs to help build the skills of the Aanganwadi caregivers. Essar volunteers created toys and learning aids from waste and other material, and the learning materials were donated to the aanganwadis of the Jhakhar, Singach, Vadinar and Timdi villages.
